Daring to Bring Dreams to Life

Dreams of a floor covered in brightly wrapped gifts spilling out from under a twinkling Christmas tree fill many children’s waking and sleeping moments this time of year. Their imaginations run wild as to what will be revealed when they rip the paper from the packages…

But several children in the Union area may not even dare dream this childhood fantasy.

And that is where the local Angel Tree program steps in…to bring a small portion of this dream to life for Union children who may not receive any Christmas gifts otherwise.

The Angel Tree at the United Bank of Union location on Main Street.
Sponsored by area clubs and businesses, the Angel Tree gives each child in the program three gifts as well as a ham to each family. The children are referred to the program by a very reliable source, according to Aaron Hall, the program’s organizer. The Angel Tree does not accept applications, but all children and families reside in the Union School District.

How can you participate in the program? Simply…
  • Pick up an angel at any of the three United Bank of Union locations.
  • Purchase a gift for the child on the angel – age, clothing sizes, and interests are listed on the angel.
  • Return your wrapped gift, with the angel attached to it, to any United Bank of Union location by December 14th.

A few of the angels that are waiting for you.
Then, Santa and his elves deliver the gifts. Kiwanis members dress up as Santa Claus and Union High School Key Clubbers as elves, and the organizers deliver the dreams and fulfill a bit of the Christmas fantasy.

According to Hall, the Angel Tree program serves an average of 40 families and 120 kids each year. Hall does not know when the program began. A similar program, the Giving Tree, is in its 15th year at Central Elementary and Clark-Vitt Elementary. Students there have the opportunity to choose angels at school to purchase Christmas gifts for.

Sponsors of the Angel Tree program include United Bank of Union, Middle School National Junior Honor Society, Union High School Key Club, Strubberg Accounting, Union Kiwanis Club, Ameren UE, and Dollar General.

The United Bank of Union locations are:

15 E. Main in downtown Union
Monday - Thursday 8 A.M. - 3 P.M.
Friday 8 A.M. - 6 P.M.
Saturday 8 A.M. - 12 Noon

1440 Rebel Road, next to Wal-Mart, lobby hours of 9 am to 7 pm
Monday - Friday 9 A.M. - 7 P.M.
Saturday 8 A.M. - 2 P.M.

210 West Hwy. 50, across from Sonic, lobby hours of 9 am to 6 pm
Monday - Friday 8 A.M. - 6 P.M.
Saturday 8 A.M. - 12 Noon

Stop by today to choose your angel to bless with a gift. The price of the gift is whatever you are comfortable spending. If you are able, don’t hesitate to pick up more than one angel to shop for this year…you will be glad you did!

A Sought After Shopping Destination {UMS Craft Fair}

Did you know that Union hosts one of the largest craft fairs in the state of Missouri? Yes, right here in our middle school, over 300 booths, representing arts and crafts from many different states, set up a little shop in the gyms, halls, classrooms, and cafeteria. And  thousands of people from a good 2 hour radius descend onto Union to shop until they drop.

Have you stopped by the UMS Craft Fair yet? By shopping at the fair, you are not only supporting small home businesses who have booths, but you are also supporting the middle school, the band, and the town of Union.

It's a vicious cycle:
  • UMS teachers, parents, and students organize and host the craft fair
  • artists and vendors purchase booth space in the fair (with the money going directly to UMS)
  • YOU and other shoppers purchase items at the craft fair (money goes to the small businesses and hobbyists)
  • artists and vendors as well as shoppers eat and spend time in Union over the weekend (money going to local businesses)
Yep, this event supports the community, the school, and local businesses, and you get to shop and pick up Christmas gifts and a thing or two for yourself.

Here is the important info:

November 10 to 11, 2012
Saturday 8 am - 4 pm
Sunday 10 am - 4 pm

Union Middle School
503 West End Avenue
Union, MO

Oh, and there are coupons to use at the craft fair! On Friday (update: CLICK HERE to get the coupons!), I will post a link on the Experience Union Facebook page to download an app with the coupons. There will be a printable version as well in case you don't have an iPhone or Android smartphone to use the app.

{P.S. Coupon app is sponsored by Marcink Designs, and all booths that have a coupon will be donating to our local Giving Tree program that gives Christmas gifts to local kids who may not otherwise receive any gifts. So be sure to visit the booths with coupons!}

Robertsville State Park

Just 13 miles from Union is a hidden gem: Robertsville State Park. Beyond having access to the Meramec River, there's an excellent (and fairly small) campground that has 12 basic and 15 electric sites. I love to camp and this was the first place I took my daughter camping because it was close to home and had excellent facilities.
There is also a very kid-friendly hiking trail that I have taken my kiddo on many times, even just on little day trips. The .8 mile Spice Bush Trail is fairly level and takes about 35 to 40 min depending upon your pace. The only "tip" I have is if there has been heavy rains, you may want to avoid it as it tends to flood. It is in a low area. Beyond hiking and camping, there are two excellent picnic shelters and a playground located near them. Robertsville State Park is for sure worth checking out!

Meet the Team {Tyann}

Business owner.
Artist.
Photographer.
Website Designer.
Amazing wife and mother according to reliable resources.

That pretty much sums it up. :) Oh, and I do enjoy attempts at humor. Sometimes I succeed, but other times only I get my own joke or slight sarcasm.

My name is Tyann Marcink, and I love our community. Yes, I really do.

I also enjoy teaching photography workshops, and one day I will finish the novel I started writing 10 years ago - an historical romance based on my great-great-great grandparents who came here to Franklin County in the mid 1800's. It's a very intriguing story, and one day, you will be able to read it.

My husband Mike, our boys, and I last Easter.
You have seen a bit of my photographic fine art (i.e. the Experience Union banner and logo) already, so see Marcink Designs for more of it. And to know the latest on my fine art, workshops, and other events, be sure to sign up for my newsletter (note: newsletter subscribers receive something special!). With Marcink Designs, I also do website design and photobook design.

So then, my other businesses that keep me busy:

My custom handpainted children's room decor is the Little Elephant Company. I feel fairly confident that I am a (if not the) worldwide leader in custom quilt clips. I create designs to coordinate with popular bedding sets and ship them all over the world. The post office clerks and I are on a first name basis.

And we have a couple homes in Branson that I manage and make available for travelers. You can see those at Vacation Home in Branson. I really enjoy the hospitality industry and helping our guests to make memories with their family and friends.

But even though I keep myself pretty busy, you will still see me around town at soccer and baseball games with my boys or at school and community events.

A few more tidbits about me:

Oh, how I revel in vacation!
I love to capture displays of the stunningly awesome
power of God...even if it's only a fraction of it.
Flowers and bokeh and my favorite pinks and purples.

Seasons of Life in Union...

Feeling a bit nostalgic as I clean through photo files... and the thing that comes to mind is how the seasons spent in Union have helped shape my daughter's life (and mine).

Playing in the fall leaves...

Enjoying that first taste of Spring at the park...

That first experience swimming in the Bourbese River during the lazy days of summer...

The first time going "solo" on a saucer in winter...

All those moments and memories of each "season" of life have happened right here in Union, Missouri. If you're like me, you've found it to be a pretty good place to raise your kid, or maybe you found it a good place to grow up because you were raised here...

Union, afterall, is a great place to "experience" during any season...as our blog's title states. I hope you make some great memories each season of your life and of the year right here in Union, Missouri.

Meet the team: Michelle

My name is Michelle and I have lived in Missouri all my life. Big Piney, Eugene, Warrensburg, Warrenton, Marthasville... and Union have all been the towns I have called "home." I moved to Union well over a decade ago because it was a great fit for me and provided an easy commute to my job teaching in a neighboring school district. I've come to love the town square, the parks, and the little things that make this town special.

I must say that the biggest joy in my life is my daughter. She's my #1. I had been warned my whole life how much a child will change who you are - that parenthood redefines you - all those people were so right! :)

Here are a few other random words that help "introduce" me to you. Camping. Creativity. Travel. Reading. Teaching. Honesty. Art. Photography. Humor. Journalism. UCM - GO MULES! Yosemite. Mark Twain National Forest. Catfish.

Always remember: Not all those who wander are lost.

2012 Franklin County Fair and {Fabulous Fair Freebies}

Sticky cotton candy fingers, juicy turkey legs, tasty warm waffle ice cream sandwiches, powder sugary funnel cake faces, tantalizing roast beef sandwiches...can't you smell the delicious fair food now?

The Franklin County Fair is a long time tradition for Union. The four days of fair fun each July beckons to families from all over Franklin County every year. Fair days are filled with sights, sounds, and scents that create wonder and amazement, making everyone feel like a little kid again.

This year, the dates are Thursday, July 5th, through Sunday, July 8th. For all the exciting happenings at the fair this year, a schedule of events, and where to pick up your season passes, see the Franklin County Fair website.

So what is your favorite summer fair memory? Is there something special at the fair you want your children to experience? Tell us and you could win family passes to a day at the Franklin County Fair!

Maybe it is...

The storming of the midway rides.

...or is it...

The thrill of the dragon roller coaster.

...or even...

The wonder of a first ride on the carousel.

 Maybe it's the activities...

The feats of strength in the kids' pedal tractor pull.

...that only a fair has...

The muddiness of the pig scramble.
Oh, and I know there are more (can't make this post too terribly long!)...horseshoe tournament, 4-H exhibits, FFA petting zoo, teen dance, Fair Queen Contest, Antique Tractor Pull, money and candy scramble, Little Mr. and Miss Contest, dairy show, beef show, rabbit show, bubblegum contest, LollyPop the Clown, Super Farmer Contest, Demolition Derby...the list goes on and on and on...
